November 16, 2013



The Oak Grove Historical Society met Nov 16, 2013 at the Davis Center.

President Donna Rice called the meeting to order and led members in th Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Guest speaker, Randy McClan, was introduced. He spoke on ways to honor people of the town. Updated us on the post the city had to move. It was in the way of adding lanes on Broadway. It is being placed in Frick Park.

September 21, 2013



The Oak Grove Historical Society met September 21, 2013 at the Davis Center.

Shirley Johnson gave program on the William Wallace Johnson Family. History and pictures was enjoyed by all. There were at least ten members of family present.

President Donna called meeting to order and led members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Minutes read by Pat Soerries. Louise made a motion to accept minutes as read. CeCe seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Mary made motion to accept as read Patti seconded motion. The report was approved.

Berta made report on Book Fair. Hours will be from 10:00 to 4:00. A sign up sheet for working was passed around. Signs or flyers were put in businesses. Also put in Grain Valley and Blue Springs. Berta made report on ornaments costs is $4.33 and profit is $5.67. Must sell $108 before we start making a profit.

We received a letter from Truman saying we will receive a $1000 grant. Dinner will be November 15th to receive the grant.

Need help at George Cem. 1st and 2nd week in Oct. They have Webb site.

Called Donna to see if we wanted post that was being moved on Broadway. Don't have place for it.

Talked about going to Blackwater Oct 12 or 13. Bus would be $250 and would need 20 people. Twenty people were not interested.

President Donna Rice called meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Pat Soerries read the minutes. Wallace made motion to accept minutes as read. CeCe seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Reports Membership: Pat Soeries gave a report on how many at meeting. Pat Lewis gave on working with the school children. Berta chairman of the Book Fair. Ask for a date for this. Motion by Sharon Petet to have October 4th and 5th. Motion carried.

Tee shirts on order were given out. More can be ordered.

Pat Soerries gave out name tags Joyce had made. Members can order from Joyce. You could give a donation for one.

July 20, 2013



The July 20, 2013 meeting of the Oak Grove Historical Society was held at 10:00 AM at the Davis Center.

President Donna Rice called meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of Amercia.

Donna introduced speaker Seryl (Sonny) Webb. He read his poems on history. They were enjoyed by all.

Pat Soerries read the minutes. Mary Turner made motion to accept minutes as read. Louise Shore seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

The Truman Heartland Community Foundation requested to view our building. This was the next step for a Grant. Donna, Mark, Glen, Berta and Greg met with the committee.

We welcomed three new members. They introduced themselves. They were Patty Petet, Shirley Petet and Sharon Love.

Berta has sent for Mo. Tax Exempt.

Berta told of Grain Valley having a Book Fair. Mary made a motion to have a Book Fair. It was seconded by Berta. Motion passed.

Ideas for money making projects were Cookbook and New History of Oak Grove. CeCe said there was a committee for that. They were Karen, Joyce, CeCe, Wallace and Barbara Lefholz.

Louise Shore gave a report on All School Reunion.

Pat Soerries gave a report on membership.

Berta Graham received a letter. Was on tower at Chapel Hill to be made higher. No vote.

Talk about taking some day trips. Fran Evans told of Raven Wood south of Booneville. Dan Baer said Arrow Rock would be a good place to go.

Barbara Lefholz read an article written by Frances F. George Kabrick.

Louise made a motion to adjourn. Kathleen seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.

May 18, 2013



The May 18, 2013 meeting of the Oak Grove Hisorical Society was held at 10:00 AM at the Davis Center.

President Donna Rice called meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Donna introduced the speaker Elmer Young. Elmer spoke about John Smith. He requested to be called N(.....) John. Dr. Perry picked him up on 40 Hiway. He brouht him to the Perry home in Oak Grove. He worked for the family many years. After Dr Perry died he lived with Luke's. Perry's moved him back in to Oak Grove. A fire in his trailer killed him. He was in is 90's. He is buried at Oak Grove. He was the only colored person living at that time in Oak Grove. Perry Dunkeson also told of Perrys and him.

Pat Lewis ask for helpers for garage sale and May Fest.

Karon Findley reported she was having trouble finding homes for the Home's Tour. She asked members to contact anyone they could think. Need by next meeting. Also asked for ideas to raise money.

Louise Shore read the minutes. Pat Lewis made a motion to accept minutes as read. CeCe Morgan seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Meeting Minutes
April 20, 2013



The April 20, 2013 meeting of the Oak Grove Historical Society was held at 10:00 AM at the Davis Center.

President Donna Rice led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America.

Donna shared a story with the group about sorghum in Boston.

Donna introduced the speaker, Dan Baer. Dan spoke about the history of Chapel Hill. Guests from the Chapel Hill community were present. Dan and Kathleen had prepared handouts for those attending. A book on Chapel Hill history can be obtained from the Genealogy Library. Delores Turner, President of the Concord Cemetery Association, shared information about the care and history of the Concord cemetery.

Marilyn George updated the membership on the George Historical Cemetery. She had handouts describing the 10 Heritage Trail Panels that will be placed in the cemetery made by local high school students. The purpose of this exhibit is to explain the background and severity of “Strife in Civil War Missouri”. The George family is an example of hundreds of other western Missouri families that lived during that time. There will be a 5 foot Grey Granite Stone created for the cemetery.

Louise Shore read the minutes. Pat Lewis made a motion to accept the minutes as read. CeCe Morgan seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Treasurer Berta Graham reported a balance of $2811.21 in the checking account. Berta had received a check from Holly Scarborough for $1150.00 and a $20.00 donation. She had written checks to Dianne Hord for $107.88 for the website and a check to Barbara Griffith for the mortgage payment. The final balance was $2630.33. Pat Soerries made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Mary Turner seconded the motion. The treasurer’s report was approved.

Donna Rice opened the meeting for nominations for a Recording Secretary. Joanne Lewis felt she wasn’t ready for the position as she is a new member. Donna asked Pat Soerries if she would consider serving as Recording Secretary. Pat agreed to serve and was approved.

President Rice explained that we were going to participate in the city wide yard sale. Pat and Glen Lewis are to bring their trailer to the former Apple Market parking lot. Items are to be priced and delivered by 7:30 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2013. If anyone needs items picked up, they are to call Donna Rice and she will arrange to have the items picked up.

Donna read Jack Hackley’s letter with the recommendations from his committee for the Oak Grove Historical Society.

The Oak Grove All School Reunion is June 2, 2013. Donna is going to request that she be given a few minutes to speak to those in attendance about the Oak Grove Historical Society.

Pat Lewis stated that Sam Smith’s vocal group is willing to perform for a fundraiser…possibly an ice cream social.

Pat Soerries and Pat Lewis are going to have a booth at the Taste of Country on Saturday, 27, 2013. The purpose is to work on membership and inform attendees about the Oak Grove Historical Society.

President Rice stated that future plans might be day trips, a speaker on Sni Mills history, and a speaker on Pink Hill history.

Donna suggested we use the calling tree to publicize the Taste of Country. It was suggested by Pat Lewis that we make our presence known at local events.

Joyce Macrander made the motion to adjourn. Barbara Griffith seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.

Meeting Minutes
March 16, 2013



President Donna Rice called the March 16, 2013 meeting at the Oak Grove Historical Society to order.

The minutes were read. CeCe Morgan made the motion to approve the minutes. Pat Lewis seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Treasurer Berta Graham reported a balance of $2736.21 in the checking account. She had received a check from Holly for $1000.00. Berta had also written Barbara Griffith a check for payment on the mortgage. The business account has a balance of $2040.58.

Glen Lewis reported on the letter from the County Assessor's office. They had denied our request for 2012 real estate tax exception. We will have to submit a new request for 2013 as our name is now on the real estate tax books. Berta Graham reported that she had talked to the assessor's office regarding the matter.

Donna Rice met at Karen Findley's home to discuss progress on the Christmas Homes Tour. Karen has John & Linda Boyd, Joanne Shipman, and Aaron & Jessica Reynolds confirmed to participate in the tour. Members stated that Vicki Robinette had stated last year that she would show her home. She is not confirmed at the present time.

Prsident Rice thanked Glen Lewis and Mark Fulks for all the work they had done to apply for a grant from Truman Heartland Foundation. She also thanked Greg McLallen for his hard work on the future home of the Oak Grove Historical Society.

A group met at the Broadway Grille to discuss participation in a future garage sale.

Jack Hackley reported on his committee that was checking with other historical societies regarding the operation of their museums and fundraising ideas. Many of the museums are closed during the winter months. Several of them have larger membership numbers. His committee suggested that we have a membership drive, set a date to move into the building, establish fundraising projects, and partner with other organizations with a similar purpose.

Some fundraising ideas were to sell mugs, T-shirts, clocks, guns as raffles, benefit from those willing to leave their estate, Jack would host an auction and charge a fee for visiting the museum.

Some suggestions for publicity for our organization were to place articles in the Focus on Oak Grove newspaper on a weekly basis. Another suggestion was to host an ice cream social. A cook off was another possibility.

Pat Soerries stated that her son had suggested that they visit businesses and offer them a lifetime membership to the Oak Grove Historical Society. Pat Soerries was gong to contact businesses and Pat Lewis would work on individual memberships. Pat Lewis memtioned that she would be willing to have a dinner and invite prospective individuals for memberhip.

Mark Fulks stated that the Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Taste of Country in April. He suggested we have a table there to promote membership and educate residents of our progress. He also suggested Mayfest in May.

President Donna Rice felt we need to have as many members as possible present to vote on setting a date for when we wish to occupy the Vestal building.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. Pat Lewis seconded the mtotion. The meeting was adjourned.

February 16, 2013



The February 16, 2013 meeting of the Oak Grove Historical Society was held in the Davis Center in Oak Grove, MO.

President Donna Rice called the meeting to order.

Members said the Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Louise Shore read the minutes in place of Joanne Lewis, Recording Secretary. Barbara Lefholz made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Barbara Griffith seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

Berta Graham gave the treasurer's report. The checking account had a balance of $3547.21 until she wrote a check to Barbara Griffith as payment on the mortgage leaving a balance of $2304.21. The business account has a balance of $2040.58. Pat Lewis made a motion to accept the treasurer's report. Barbara Griffith seconded the motion. The treasurer's report was approved.

A committee was formed with Jack Hackley as chairman and members: Pat Soerries, Cindy Taylor and Barbara Griffith. They are to contact other historical societies to find out how they meet their financial obligations. The motion was made by Joyce Macrander and seconded by Wallace Johnson. The motion carried.

The fire and police department need a contact person in case they are called to respond to an event. Barbara Lafholz volunteered to be the contact person with a key to the building.

President Donna Rice asked if insurace was up-to-date. Glen Lewis said it was paid up through July 2013.

President Rice asked about taxes being paid. Barbara Griffith pays real estate taxes.

Application for the Truman Heartland Foundation grant is due by the first Thursday in April 2013. Barbara Lefholz made a motion for Berta Graham and Mark Fulks to work on the applications.

Pat Lewis volunteered to contact Greg McLallen to get pricing on future projects to be included in the application for the Truman Heartland Foundation grant.

Glen Lewis volunteered to talk with Mark Fulks about the application for the grant.

Barbara Lefholz volunteered to be program chairman. She will be responsible for contacting speakers and planning programs.

Wallace spoke about Ray Morrison having the library at Drumm Farm named after him as he provided free dental work at the Drumm Farm.

Barbara Lefholz volunteered refreshments for the March meeting.

Perry Dunkeson was a visitor to the meeting. He was wondering if some of the artifacts would be acceptable to donate to the Oak Grove Historical Society.

Ike Church made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Charles Petty seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.

January 19, 2013



The January 13, 2013 meeting of the Oak Grove Historical Society was called to order by President Pat Lewis at the Davis Center in Oak Grove, MO.

The minutes were read. Karen Findley made a motion to acept the minutes as read. Donna Rice seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported a balance of $2040.58 in the business account. The checking account has a blaance of $3490.21. When Treasurere CeCe Morgan writes Barbara Griffith a check to pay on the mortgage, there will be a balance of $2247.21. Kathleen Baer made the motion to accept the treasurer's report. Mary Turner seconded the motion. The report was approved.

Becky Dyer made the motion to accept the slate of officers for 2013. The following individuals will be President Donna Rice, Vice-President Barbara Lefholz, Treasurer Berta Graham, Recording Secretary Joanne Lewis, Corresponding Secretary Joyce Macrander, and Executive Board members Karen Findley and Carol Grote. Barbara Griffith seconded the motion. The 2013 officrs were approved.

Karen Findley expressed her willingness to chair the Christmas Homes Tour. She has Nadine Morgan, Linda Boyd, Spillman, and posssibly Vicki Robinette to open their homes for the tour. All persons must be confirmed.

Louise Shore presented the information needed to apply for the Truman Heartland Foundation grant. It must be entered before April 2013.
