The program ended with an audience participation discussion of some of the historical society's which had been researched by different members. Cindy expressed an interest in visiting the Andrew County Museum and the Herman Museum was also mentioned among several others.
Jack Hackley spoke to the members of a new money-making proposal, which would also be a great way of displaying the family histories in writing and with pictures of our residents. They would be displayed in a swinging panel - visual display located in the Historical Society building and also on a computer disk. He gave each member a sample postcard that would be sent out to the 6,000 people in the Oak Grove area. Jack had a sample display case made up for his family (about 3' x 4'). The family would rent a panel for a certain amount and time. If the people know they will be on display, he thinks they will be anxious to get their family in the swinging file as soon as possible. There were 16 members present.
Everyone was welcomed by our President Sharon Love, who then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Speaker was Perry Dunkinson, who spoke of his family as he remembers. His Great Grandfather was Dr. E.E. Perry who was the most notable. Using the horse and buggy in those days, on his way back from Bates City, found a man by the road that needed help. This was the one known as N***** John. John became part of the family. Connie Long was nurse for Dr. Perry. They called her Aunt. Because they were not allowed to all her by her given name. Great Grandma Anna Webb Perry and Doc had 3 children: Roe or (Peaches),V.G. (Vivian) and Elmer.
Roe worked for Standard Oil for 30 years. He married a girl by the name of Pearl, it was a short marriage. After retiring he became a professional gambler, and used marked cards. Perry stayed with Roe and was given a share of the money. He played at the local Legion Hall and in Ar. He would buy cattle to show where he got the money. He was a avid raccoon hunter and had the best dogs around.
V.G. married Belle. He drove and worked on school buses. He got into the business of loaning money, but you had better get a receipt. He was bank president and CEO of VG Perry Loan Co.
Elmer, Perry's granddad. His first wife was Dewey, 2nd wife Virginia. Elmer was known as the "busman". He was a deputy sheriff at one time, and sold tires. He was involved in scouting, provided money for camp for those who did not have the funds. But always found a way for them to earn the money.
Merle was the youngest of Elmer's, she was very short and tiny. She married Clifford George, who was 6'4". She always wore heels and had to have them special made as her feet were so small.
Wayne had Perry Insurance. Perry could ride the bus to Kansas City and rode to Odessa at the age of 8 or 9. Elmer started his route to Kansas City in Higginsville. Making stops along the way to the city. He had the buses for Oak Grove schools.
